Metro charges GW $1 per day per enrolled student during the fall and spring semesters. All students pay a $100 subsidized fee each semester and the university covers the rest of the cost of the U•Pass transportation program.

Undergraduate students enrolled on-campus (eg: not study abroad or traditional online only programs) full-time (12 or more credit hours) in the Columbian College of Arts & Sciences, Elliott School of International Affairs, School of Business, Milken Institute School of Public Health and School of Engineering & Applied will have the subsidized mandatory student fee included in their eBill each fall and spring semester.

The following full-time students must pre-pay a $100 non-refundable student transportation fee via eBill on their Student Account prior to picking up a U•Pass card:

  • Undergraduate students in the College of Professional Studies, School of Nursing and School of Medicine and Health Sciences  enrolled in 12 or more on-campus credits each fall and spring semester.
  • Graduate, medical, doctoral and exchange students enrolled in 9 on-campus credits or more each fall and spring semester. .
  • Law students in the JD and LLM programs enrolled in 9 credits on-campus or more each fall and spring semester.

If you are a part-time student, you are not eligible for the U•Pass program. If you are a graduate or professional student who has finished all of course requirements and are in the process of completing your thesis, dissertation and/or lab research, you will  work directly with your program director or advisor to apply for Full-Time Certification. If your program/school approves your request, you will be eligible to participate in U•Pass program.

In order to utilize the U•Pass program’s unlimited ride feature during the 2025-26 academic year, all students must pick-up a new GW-branded U•Pass card at one of the upcoming distribution events. U•Pass cannot be loaded onto a personal Smartrip card. Your GW U•Pass can be connected to your Apple Wallet. Once uploaded into your Apple Wallet, the physical U-Pass card is deactivated. Full-time students are eligible for one U•Pass card each academic year and must pay a $20 replacement fee if the student loses the U•Pass card.

*If you experience any issues with your U•Pass card, we recommend you keep your card and contact our UPass Team at upassatgwu [dot] edu for help.
